1. The ABS’ nominal household spending indicator (HSI) rose +1.3% m/m in May and rose +5.5% y/y.

Transport spending rose +1.4% m/m despite lower fuel prices in the month. The ABS noted that the increase “was mostly due to travel related refunds returning to normal after being significantly elevated in April due to flight cancellations associated with the Middle East conflict”.

Excluding transport-related spending, the HSI rose +0.6% m/m in May after declining in April.

Discretionary spending rose a strong +2.1% m/m in May, with hospitality up +1.9% m/m and clothing and footwear rising +2.7% m/m.
