Today’s release of the NSW and Queensland government budgets were the last of the 2026-27 state Budgets. Key budget metrics aggregated across Australia’s state, territory and federal governments are shown below. We then focus on the NSW and Queensland Budgets.

1. The aggregate general government cash deficit expanded significantly in the current fiscal year to 30 June. It is forecast to widen a little further in 2026-27 but narrow slightly relative to GDP.

2. It’s a similar narrative if we focus on the broader non-financial public sectors for states & territories (NFPS forecasts aren’t available for the federal government past 2026-27).
