1. Nominal retail trade in Australia rose +0.2% m/m in February, which was below consensus expectations. Sales rose +3.6% y/y.
Real Q1 retail sales growth is shaping up to be much softer than the +1% q/q Q4 outcome which was boosted by sales events.
Excluding spending on food and eating out, sales declined for the second consecutive month after growing strongly amid sales events in late 2024.
2. Nevertheless, ex food and eating out retail sales in February remained above the level in October last year.
