1. Nominal retail trade in Australia fell 0.1% m/m in December. This followed solid rises of +0.5% m/m and +0.7% m/m in October and November, respectively.
The ABS noted that “Cyber Monday fell in early December and boosted spending” towards the start of December, particularly on household goods (+1.6% m/m).
The smoothing of sales across the December quarter in 2024 meant that there was less volatility in monthly retail sales across the quarter than in prior years.
2. While ongoing sales activity boosted nominal household goods sales in December, clothing & footwear and other retailing experienced solid pullbacks in sales.
